5 inexpensive Sim Upgrades I Wish I Bought on Day One!

When I first set up my golf simulator, I spent almost all my energy obsessing over the big ticket items,  getting the right projector throw ratio, mounting the enclosure square, and dialing in the launch monitor.

Then reality set in.

Within two weeks of practice, I realized it’s rarely the big tech that cause the problems indoors, it’s the stupid little friction points. Walking back and forth across the mat just to hit enter on a PC, breaking plastic tees that ricochet off garage walls, and picking up scuffed balls from the floor.

If you already have your hitting bay functional, skip the expensive hardware upgrades for a minute. These are five cheap accessories, all under $100 on Amazon.  They immediately made practicing in my simulator ten times less annoying.  I know, sounds silly bitching about these things, first world problems right, however, when you are in the sim room, you just want a nice rhythm of hitting…not walking back and forth, or stopping to get the balls repeatedly.  Perhaps these recommendations can help.

BirTee Pro Variety Pack (The End of Broken Tees Flying Everywhere)

Standard wooden tees snap instantly on turf, and shoving them into stiff artificial grass usually leaves your ball sitting crooked. There is an alternative, those thick rubber driving range tubes.  They are not bad, but sometimes it feels like hitting a tire iron on mishits.

I switched to a pack of BirTee Pro stand-up tees and haven't looked back. They sit flat on top of any hitting strip, require zero drilling or turf modifications, and give you an identical ball height every swing.

• The Reality Check: Because they sit loose on the mat, you will send them flying downrange occasionally on high-swing-speed driver shots. A lot of guys tether them with a short strip of paracord or dental floss to keep from chasing them into the screen.  I like to use fishing line.  Tend not to twist, and you cant really see it.
• Which size to use: The pack comes with sizes #1 through #8. I keep the #3 and #4 set aside strictly for driver, and the #1 or #2 handy whenever I want to hit low-spin 3-woods off a tee.

For the first month, I racked up more steps walking between my turf and my computer desk than I did actually swinging. Whether you’re running GSPro, TGC 2019, or proprietary monitor software, having to walk over to your monitor just to click "aim right," change a club, or take a quick mulligan kills your practice rhythm.

Dedicated sim control boxes are great, but paying $150+ for a foot pedal or arcade button box felt excessive.

Instead, grab a cheap handheld 2.4GHz wireless air mouse. It plugs into any PC via a tiny USB receiver, fits in the palm of your hand, and moves the mouse cursor simply by waving your wrist. Most come with a mini QWERTY keyboard on the back, so tapping quick hotkeys takes zero effort.

• Bay Hack: Slap a strip of industrial Velcro on the back and stick it directly to your golf bag frame or club rack right next to your hitting zone.

Dedicated Indoor-Only Balls (Or RCT Balls for Radar)

The quickest way to burn through a $500 impact screen is hitting balls you found in the woods or pulled out of your Sunday bag.

Outdoor balls pick up invisible micro-scratches from sand traps, cart paths, and tree branches. Indoors at 130+ mph ball speed, those tiny rough edges act like coarse sandpaper against your screen's fabric mesh. Within a few sessions, you'll start seeing gray burn marks and frayed threads.

Buy one fresh dozen, whether that's clean standard tour urethane or specialized Titleist Pro V1 RCT balls if you're running a radar monitor, and make them strictly off-limits for outside play.

• Radar tip: If you use radar tracking, RCT balls reflect the signal internally without requiring annoying metallic stickers that peel off after 40 shots.
• The Golden Rule: The second an indoor ball catches a sharp groove scratch or shows any scuffing, retire it immediately to your outdoor wedge practice bag.

Bending over 100 times during a practice session isn't just tiring; it breaks your setup routine. Electric ball feeders are neat, but they take up floor real estate and require running another power cord across a garage floor where you're swinging metal sticks.

The Callaway Pro Caddie is purely mechanical. You dump about 30 to 35 balls into the top hopper, place it right at the back edge of your hitting mat, and tap the release lever with the head of your iron. It drops one ball down a tiny track right onto your hitting line.

High-speed swing cameras tied to dedicated capture software are the dream, but most people already have an iPhone or high-end Android in their pocket capable of 240fps slow-motion capture.

The problem is tripods. Tripods take up massive floor space in tight rooms, have legs you inevitably trip over in low-light bay setups, and smash easily if an errant ricochet catches them.

Pick up a clip-on alignment stick phone holder. It locks your phone in place and clamps directly onto any standard alignment stick stuck into your golf bag, or onto an enclosure pole.  I put mine on the garage door aluminum tracks.

• Setup Advice: Position your bag directly "down the line" (aimed straight through the hands toward the target) at waist height for the cleanest swing plane review. It keeps your floor completely clear and keeps your phone safe from bouncing balls.

What to Add First?

If your setup feels clunky, don't rush to buy a new mat or upgrade your projector. Start with the air mouse to fix the walking back-and-forth, swap to dedicated clean balls to save your screen fabric, and dial in your tee height. You'll spend under $75 total, and your bay will feel significantly more dialed in.
